Defunding Legal Services for Low-Income Americans Will Devastate Hardworking Families

Statement of Christine Hines, Legislative Director, National Association of Consumer Advocates

President Trump’s proposed FY2018 budget released today would shred the safety net by eradicating longstanding, critical programs that assist and support Americans in times of need.

In particular, the budget’s proposal to eliminate funding for the Legal Services Corporation, the organization that funds legal services for low-income Americans, is cruel. LSC programs across the country help Americans with serious troubles ranging from domestic violence, housing and foreclosure, and harm caused by predatory financial services practices, such as abusive debt collection and debt traps.

Committed attorneys at LSC-funded programs work tirelessly to provide access to justice for fellow Americans who are economically disadvantaged and saddled with serious legal problems. Indeed, they help improve and even save lives.

Congress must reject this and all other unnecessary and ruthless proposed budget cuts.
