SUMMARY:Helping Transgender Consumers under the FCRA
DESCRIPTION:Credit and background reporting problems can be frustrating for any consumer to resolve. But transgender consumers face unique challenges when confronting these problems. They often encounter common issues with the way consumer reporting agencies deal with their gender transition. Further\, the effects of those practices can be especially harmful to transgender consumers\, as they impose crushing emotional burdens and may even open them up to discrimination. This webinar will help you advise transgender clients proactively\, and it will also arm you with the tools to litigate these claims when necessary. Some basic knowledge of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) would be helpful. \n\nWhat You Will Learn \n• What are common issues confronting the transgender community regarding credit/background reporting\n• How to proactively advise transgender clients on ways to mitigate and/or be aware of common problems\n• How to litigate FCRA claims involving issues specific to transgender consumers \n\nSpeakers\nKari Rudd has been part of the consumer rights team at Bay Area Legal Aid since 2012\, working with low-income clients and community members to advance consumer rights around credit reporting\, debt collection\, and other consumer financial issues. They do this work at monthly pro per Consumer Rights Clinics throughout the San Francisco Bay Area\, in litigating cases\, and engaging in all sorts of other advocacy in between. \nErika Heath fights for economic justice on behalf of consumers and employees\, with a particular focus on erroneous credit/background reports\, unlawful debt collection practices\, bank fraud\, ID theft\, and other unfair trade practices. Erika is particularly passionate about assisting fellow members of the LGBTQ+ community through those employment and consumer legal challenges. She is currently Of Counsel to Francis Mailman Soumilas\, P.C.\, and a Lecturer at Berkeley Law.
