Thank you for calling your U.S. Senators and Representatives as part of NACA’s Call-In Day of Action. We have two asks for your lawmakers:
- Support and defend the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; and
- Support S. 467, the End Double Taxation of Consumer Claims Act (Check if your Senator is already a co-sponsor here).
NOTE: Find the name and phone number of your Members of Congress here: https://www.congress.gov/members/find-your-member. Enter your voting address. A page will appear with the contact information for each member. If that link does not work for you, use: https://www.usa.gov/elected-officials.
Make THREE calls (to your two Senators and one House representative).
Please leave a message if you don’t reach a live person.
After you make your calls, please let us know how they went on our feedback form.
Below are two different scripts: one for your two Senators and the other for your Representative.
Call Scripts
For Your 2 Senators
- My name is [TKTKTKT] and I’m calling from [INSERT THE NAME OF YOUR HOMETOWN/CITY.]. I’m calling Senator [INSERT NAME] for support on two key issues that will help everyday people in our state.
- First, I ask [HIM/HER] to support and defend the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Without the CFPB’s rules, guidance, and law enforcement, the guardrails are down. Financial predators and fraudsters will run amok and hurt all of us. Protect your constituents and reject any bills that would alter the CFPB’s structure or funding or reverse its rules.
- Can I count on the Senator to support and defend the CFPB?
- Second, I call on the Senator to co-sponsor S. 467, the End Double Taxation of Consumer Claims Act. It would fix an illogical IRS policy that punishes harmed consumers when they enforce privacy and financial laws. Consumers are double taxed on awarded legal fees that go directly to their attorneys who also pay income tax on the same funds. Congress provided relief in the tax code for similar awarded legal fees in civil rights and employment cases. The system should also treat taxpayers fairly when they use longstanding consumer statutes. Contact the office of Sen. Cortez Masto to co-sponsor S. 467.
- Can I count on the Senator to co-sponsor this bill?
- Thank you for your time.
